Eternalink’s Farewell™ app uses Facebook data to create an online memorial
published 1 Mar 2012
Unfortunately, some of us will undoubtedly find ourselves in a situation where a family member or friend passes away unexpectedly, leaving many online friends unaware and disconnected from the mourning process. If you own a Facebook account, indeed, someone you love will be in this situation one day in dealing with your passing. This is a difficult time for all and anything that can make the bereavement process easier is a welcome aid. A Facebook profile, left behind, is a reflection of what the deceased wanted others to think about him while alive. So it’s natural to refer to the Facebook content to create an online tribute. However, starting from scratch can be cumbersome, and simply copying and pasting into an online template may not capture the quality of the original source data.
For this reason, we are pleased to announce our Farewell app which allows you to automatically setup an online tribute using specific data from an existing Facebook account. In fact, if you are yourself anticipating death, you can use this app to set up a draft memorial yourself, to be activated and published by your executor or someone else close to you. Assuming you have the login details, use our Farewell app to create a draft online tribute based on information from the Facebook account. Using only a few keystrokes, you are able to automatically obtain a basic biography, profile photo, favorites, photo albums and videos from the account. To setup such an online tribute, simply grant access to the Facebook account for this specific purpose and our wizard will guide you through the process of posting an online memorial. Before publishing, we will ask for confirmation of death and for the date of death and review the contents of the memorial. Then, you or your executor can access and update, including providing information such as the time and date of the funeral, where flowers or donations in lieu of flowers should be sent, and send email notices out to family and friends to ensure that they stay informed. The online memorial can be set to public or private. In sum, the entire process of preserving the memory of a cherished life is greatly simplified.
