Pope John Paul II was not afraid to stand by his convictions. He expressed these convictions in numerous foreign visits, meeting with political and world leaders alike and expressing his opinions in the local languages. No other pope in history has traveled as much as Pope John Paul II. Consequently, less than a decade after becoming Pope, the World was more than aware of the Catholic church’s firm stand against abortion, birth control and the ordination as priests of women.
