Steve Irwin "Croc Hunter" : His Untimely Death

by Danna Schneider

The entertainment and zoological industry has lost a true inspiration to us all today. Steve Irwin, the infamous "Crocodile Hunter" was killed while filming a new documentary at sea about "dangerous underwater creatures", by a stingray attack at the age of 44.

Steve Irwin has served as an icon the likes of Jack Hanna and Jacques Cousteau, and was known for his passion and enthusiasm for wildlife, in particular crocodiles.

He gained international stardom as the Croc Hunter with his documentaries and series on wildlife, which frequently aired on the Discovery Channel, and other animal and wildlife networks. He also owned a zoo of his own in Australia, where he met his wife Terri, also a passionate wildlife officianado.

Steve came dangerously close to being seriously wounded and even killed many times before by crocodiles, his most frequently documented and filmed animals. In fact, most people were surprised to hear he was actually killed by a stingray wound, which kills very few people.

So far, conjecture is that the stingray's serrated tail actually struck up and through his ribcage, puncturing his heart, and that in fact is what caused his untimely death.

Steve Irwin leaves behind a wife, Terri, and two young children, aged 8 and 3, a boy and girl. His most famous television show "Crocodile Hunter" was picked up by the Discovery Channel in 1992, and instantly made him a celebrity.

People loved his charm and his fearlessness, and really identified with his offbeat personality and his obvious passion for crocodiles and other wildlife.

He fell under public scrutiny though when, a few years back, he actually fed one of his alligators on camera with his then infant son in his arms. But he quickly regained the public's admiration, admitting he probably shouldn't have done that.

Steve has served as a great entertainer, and friend to animals as well as a great animal educator to children and adults alike, and he will be sorely missed.
