Denise I. Johengen (née Wagner), entered into glory August 21, 2009, in Amherst NY at age 83. Devoted wife of the late Donald C. Johengen; loving mother of Dr. Carl Matthew Johengen (Bath, NY) and Christopher A. Johengen. Born in Buffalo on July 26, 1926, she moved with her parents to Hamburg in 1938 and graduated from Hamburg High School in 1944. She received a B.A. degree from D’Youville College in 1948, and taught history at North Collins Central School from 1948-54. She married Donald C. Johengen in 1952 and lived in Collins Center until shortly after his death in 1988. She returned to Hamburg and lived on Janice Place until health concerns necessitated that she receive nursing care. Since 2001 she was a resident at the Weinberg Campus in Getzville. A person of deep faith, she was active in her churches, SS. Peter and Paul in Hamburg and St. Frances Cabrini in Collins Center; she also volunteered with organizations such as the Springville Players and the St. Francis High School Parents’ Guild.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, September 4th at 11:00 am at Epiphany of Our Lord Church, 10893 Sisson Highway (Route 75) in Langford. Interment will follow at St. Martin’s Cemetery adjacent to the church, followed by a luncheon in the parish hall.
