Joan was the youngest of 8 children, with 3 older brothers - William, Ralph and Charlie, and 4 older sisters - Gladys, Connie, Chris and Mary.
Ralph and Charlie decided to emigrate to Australia in 1928 and the rest of the family were soon to follow. At the tender age of 12 Joan arrived in Australia with her family and lived in a rented cottage in St. Kilda Road, near Park Street and continued her education.
