Orie Varvel
To the obit faithful…like Dad (Orie "David" Varvel, 1939 to 2001),
Most Sunday afternoons, after dinner (usually pot roast he set to cook slowly during church…mmmm!) and while the Cowboys (coach Landry vintage) were playing, Dad would open the Sunday paper to review the obituaries. When asked why, he would quip "Just checkin' to make sure I'm still here." but I think the truth was a little deeper than that. He loved taking this brief journey into the lives of each one whose life had passed, into these lasting impressions captured by their loved ones in the Sunday paper. Perhaps there were lessons to be learned, or life similarities to share, or perhaps he just wanted to hear their story as a small tribute to their lives; as a way to honor them. Perhaps all these reasons and others he'll share when I see him again Heavenside.

February 6, 2008 marks the 7th year since Dad passed. I've sat down to accomplish this tribute numerous times but writing Dad's obituary always brings a flood of thoughts, emotions, and reflections. How do you capture a lifetime of joy, character, and love through action in a few moments of thought. Perhaps it is best captured by the consistent determination of each of his 4 sons. We each have determined to follow and pattern much of our lives after the habits, thoughts, and manners portrayed by our father…because they are worthy of duplication in our lives and hopefully will be passed on to our children. We love you Dad.
