After stalking the pontiff for some time, a Turkish terrorist named Mehmet Ali Agca attempted to assassinate Pope John Paul II as he traveled to the Vatican in May 1981, to attend his general audience. Fortunately, the attempt failed, although the pope was bedridden for two months in a Rome hospital.
