STUBBORN

You hard-headed, stubborn man!
Running away from everything any time you can -
Never listening to anyone no matter how they care,
And when they wanted you closer you were never there.

You non-listening, bull-headed fool!
Did no one ever teach you about the golden rule?
“Do unto others as you would they do to you”?
I guess you’d still be walking if only you knew.

And you never listened when they said
You should take care of yourself.
You’ll only pay for the life you’ve led
When you have nothing left.

And here you are, once again,
Surrounded by your friends and kin,
The same ones you knew would always be there,
Because they love you – because they care.

I would rather spend another twenty years
Arguing with you through my tears
Than to watch you now just fade away
Because of the choices you have made.

But I suppose that will never be
Since the illness will take you away from me –
And I’ll never have a chance to prove to you
What love, and hope, and faith can do.
We’ll move mountains, but you won’t see.
We’ll unlock treasures with that key –
That key called love, faith, and trust -
But you won’t be there to celebrate with us.

I pray that you shall finally find peace,
That God will grant you sweet release –
And you will take His hand when He calls,
But you are a stubborn man, after all.

As you must leave us, don’t forget,
We weren’t ready to let go just yet.
We had plans that included you
But you have other things to do.

So take your leave from this horrid life
And enjoy some peace in God’s Holy Light –
Make your peace with Him and lay you to rest,
And remember us, who loved you best.

Despite your faults, despite your ills,
Know that we have loved you still.
And when the Good Lord takes you away,
In our hearts you shall stubbornly stay.
