The achievement for which he remains best remembered is the amazing 60 League goals scored in a single season – a record set in 1928 and which is unlikely ever to be broken.

During a hugely successful career in the game, he made 433 appearances for Everton, winning the FA Cup and First Division Championship as well as scoring 18 goals in 16 appearances for England .
